In the late 1990s, scan network PC techniques became more sophisticated and were adapted to advanced networking technologies, such as Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) and Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).

The most recent trend in QoS is simplification and automation, with the goal of simply and efficiently provisioning "intelligent" QoS on IP networks. When viewed as individual features, QoS technologies offer a myriad of "nerd knobs" that can be turned. In the hands of capable administrators, these can be used to build very sophisticated networks. However, they also can result in very complex configurations. Many administrators do not have the time or the desire to delve into QoS technologies to this expert level and instead would prefer to define high-level policies and have the network simply "scan network PC" to implement them.
