A network assessment test policer, however, has no direct knowledge of applications and marks traffic (if configured to perform marking) based on the traffic rate. This can be thought of as a horizontal separation of traffic. A policer could have indirect knowledge of an application by virtue of the class where the policer is appliedin this configuration, the application already has been separated from other traffic into its own horizontal class. The policer itself, however, does not look at the class; it looks at only the traffic rate for the traffic flowing through it
CAR is the oldest policing tool offered in the Cisco IOS Software and is included in this chapter primarily for historical reasons. However, the Cisco 7300 platforms still use CAR in certain configurations. RFC-compliant policers are available in newer releases of the Cisco IOS Software, so CAR is not generally recommended for network assessment test deployments
