A network assessment test policer, however, has no direct knowledge of applications and marks traffic (if configured to perform marking) based on the traffic rate. A policer could have indirect knowledge of an application by virtue of the class where the policer is appliedin this configuration, the application already has been separated from other traffic into its own horizontal class. CAR is the oldest policing tool offered in the Cisco IOS Software and is included in this chapter primarily for historical reasons.
