network assessment checklist

Although a network assessment checklist policer can be deployed at ingress or egress interfaces, it often is deployed at the network edge on traffic ingress. If packets will be dropped, there is little point in spending valuable CPU cycles routing and processing these packets. However, policers also often are deployed at the traffic egress interface to control bandwidth used or are allocated to a particular class of traffic. This bandwidth decision often is not made until the packets reach the egress interface

As mentioned before, policers determine whether each packet conforms or exceeds (or, optionally, violates) to the traffic configured policies and take the prescribed action. The action taken can include dropping or re-marking the packet. Conforming traffic is traffic that falls within the rate configured for the policer. Exceeding traffic is traffic that is above the policer rate but still within the burst parameters specified. Violating traffic is traffic that is above both the configured network assessment checklist traffic rate and the burst parameters
