Network Scanning ToolsVarious network scanning tools reveal various characteristics of the network showing various aspects of the network functionality. Some products detect network vulnerability holes helping the network team close them before they will be found by the hackers; some implement other tasks. In this web page we will describe network inventory scanning software. Let us check how it works with one of the most reliable products of this kind - Asset Tracker for Networks. When launched, Asset Tracker suggests the user to select workgroups or domains that need to be inventoried selecting them from the standard Windows Networking window; the network administrator can also choose standalone computers as well. Alternatively, the network administrator can specify IP address range the program will inspect for computers and network equipment. After that Asset Tracker starts the scan, displaying the inventory process log in it's window. The process is run in multiple Windows threads (that means that many items are inventoried at one time) and is fully automated: no user assistence is required. After the scan will be done, the program records inventory scan results in a database and displays the list of scanned computers to the user. The network administrator may choose this or that computer, and the program will show him/her comprehensive inventory details on the selected item. Since the inventory information was stored in a database, it could be also checked at any time later, giving the user additional information when solving the user problems remotelly.
