Network AuditThere is a lot of different jobs that need to be implemented to make a full audit of a network: IT security audit, IT inventory, etc., and many of them require specialized software to complete this or that job. This page discusses the software that implements the main part of network audit - the network inventory procedures that collect information about all workstations, servers and other devices connected to the LAN - Asset Tracker for Networks. This software scans the network using the IP address range specified by the network administrator and lists all addresses that have a device associated with that address. After that, Asset Tracker detects the type of the device and performs the inventory routine applicapable to that device type. For example, for network equipment such as routers and network printers it uses SNMP as the basic protocol that can be used to retrieve device configuration settings, etc. Finally, Asset Tracker detects as much information about each networked device as possible. For example, for a Windows workstation it reveals one to three megabytes of useful configuration data. All inventory information retrieved during the network audit routines is saved in the Asset Tracker inventory database kept on the local HDD of the network admistrator or in a shared server folder. The first way of storing is used for the additional safety of this (important) information; the 2nd is used to share the inventory data between different network administrators. This database is used for viewing the PC or server or device inventory without re-inventorying it at any time when this data is needed, and also for building detailed reports the program installation is equipped with.
