IT Inventory

What do people mean under IT inventory? How is it used?

This is a synonim for detecting all company's IT ownings: servers, workstations, printers and network devices, recording software and hardware details of each individual item on a separate place. After the full inventory process will be done, network administrators, having a wider view on the inventory details collected, will be able to realize the current status of the company's IT assets, plan upgrades and modifications or the organization's computers or network equipment.

Performing the IT inventory, the network administrator should collect all possible details about each individual item in the corporate network. If we are speaking about Windows workstations, it is required to record the type, model and frequency of the computer CPU, memory size installed, main board model, type, model and capacity for all hard disk drives installed, video card model and memory size, display adapter name and vendor and so on. It is also required to have the list of software products installed on each indiviual workstation, including software title, version, type (commercial or opensource/freeware) and developer name. Regardless to say that the nettork administrator should also have the name of the operating system installed in each computer, list of service packs and hotfixes, browser name and version and antivirus softrware title, version and last update date on file.

Obviously, it is impossible to implement all mentioned job manually, and there should be a software product that not only does that job for you, but also generates printable reports on the IT inventory detected. The best program of this kind is Asset Tracker for Networks, and you can try the free evaluation version of this software.
