Information System AuditIt is impossible to find a software product able to do all perts of the information system audit in full and with good quality; instead, professionals often use specialized programs each performing it's own task, and finally have the most comprehensive IS audit one can expect. On this page we will discuss one of the two main parts of the IT audit component: IT inventory, i.e. detecting detailed configuration information about servers, workstations and other network components. Asset Tracker for Networks, our information system inventory program, detects all possible details about the network components. When launched, the program advices the user to specify the IP address range and, when this will be done, starts the network inventory. When working, the software finds each IP address in the IP range specified and if it finds out that this address represents a computer or a network equipment, starts the inventory job for it. For Windows PC's, the programs retrieves over one megabyte of useful inventory details, i.e. detects almost every setting; for computers running other OS's and network devices such as switches and network printers Asset Tracker detects all information that can be detected using SNMP protocol. After retrieving inventory information from the workstations, servers and devices Asset Trackers writes it down to a centralized database stored on the hard disk of the local computer or on a shared server folder according to the network administrator's preferences. This information contains almost everything about the LAN and can be used at any time. The IT staff can not only view the inventory details for each individual device, but also generate comprehensive printable reports and even save it to various formats, including, but not limited to ODBC data sources or text and HTML files that can be used in the information system audit report.
